Roberto Gini, conductor and viola da gamba player In the world of early music, the name of Roberto Gini is associated with the music of Monteverdi. After specializing in bass-viola with Jordi Saval in Basel, Switzerland and attending classes in chamber music by Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Salzburg during 1985, R. Gini founded the ensemble “Concerto”. With this ensemble he achieved international reputation thanks to several recordings of Monteverdi’s works. In 1992 he was member of the International Scientific Committee for the organization of the Monteverdi celebrations to commemorate the 250th year of the composer's death. In 1993 he was appointed as artistic director of the Cremona Festival, the principal venue of the Monteverdi festivities. For this jubilee he recorded the first complete performance of Monteverdi's magnum opus Selva Morale e Spirituale, on four CDs published by Dynamics, Italy.
From 1992 to 1994 Gini directed the courses in Monteverdi's vocal style, which were organized by AsLiCo on behalf of the Italian Culture Ministry. In 1998-99 he was artistic director of the celebrations of the legacy of Este Family for Modena Capitale. In the same year his recording of the La Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo Re by G. Bononcini, was awarded the first prize for the performance of Italian vocal music by the Venetian Cini Foundation. In 2000 R. Gini has toured Europe with his stage performance of Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by C. Monteverdi. In addition to his vast activities as conductor and musical director, Roberto Gini is a well known virtuoso player and an esteemed teacher of the bass-viola and baroque cello. In 1979 he was appointed Professor at the Municipal Music School of Milan. There he also founded the research laboratory for 17th-century Italian music, which was attended by students from all over the world. In 2001 he moved his course to Lodi (Lombardy, Italy) and was followed by all his students. Since 1983 R. Gini has held the chair for bass-viola at the Center for Ancient Music of Geneva, a division of the High Conservatory of Music, where he teaches classes in chamber music and orchestral conducting. He has been invited many times to teach seminars and master classes all over Europe
